Massive Attack
New!
Our first event in 2007 would be the biggie organized
by Territory entitled Massive Territory. Major designers
like Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo Lab (Japan), Joshua Davis
(US), 123Klan (France) and Kinetic (Singapore) will
be in town for this big bang of a conference on the
13th of January. Don't forget to come over to our booth
if you guys are there! See ya!

MDeC Grant
New!
Gilamon's proposal was short-listed among the 20 finalists
for MDeC(Multi Media Development Corporation) Grant.
We went in for the presentation on 20th Dec, after a
nerve wracking day, we were among the 10 who were selected
to received the grant. We were very grateful for the
swift decision of MDeC for disallowing Ben(one of the
judges and also a colleague from our day job) to vote
for us. The winning couldn't be so meaningful if not
for that. Another happy note was fellow comic artists
Krom and Azhar, who share the same passion for comics
were among the winners as well. Congratulations to all
and like what Judge Milx said, "Next, we want to
see products!" You bet you are gonna see product
from Gilamon, sir.

Sci-Fi Con and 24-Hour
Comic
New!
Its very generous of the science fiction convention
to have a comic zone. We put a booth there for the Saturday
and Sunday sessions. Unfortunately the date of Sci-Fi
Con clashed with Comics Fiesta, hopefully we could participate
in both event next year. The high-light of Comic Zone
was Malaysia's very first 24-Hour Comic challenge. Lefty
were among the 20 participants who have to finish plotting,
scripting, drawing and lettering 24 pages of original
comic artwork within 24 hours. It was an up hill battle
but like what Scott MacCloud said, we learnt so much
from this experience that drawing comics may not be
the same again. Newsarama had a write up on this event
as well.

Digi Street Blast
New!
We were among the street wear labels for Digi Street
Blast @Bukit Bintang. We had such a good response from
the people who came that day, we just want to say thank
you to you all again. Must take note for bigger size
t-shirts for people like DJ Jungle Jerry was interested
in Major Zombie: Fly but the L size was too small for
him. A Swedish designer who was here for holiday picked
up our last piece of Zombie JUICE tee for the night(our
display unit) and wears it on the spot! The best part
of the evening was Digi was kind enough to showcase
all the street wears on the main stage, worn by the
designers! Michael was our representative to strut around
on stage with others such as Kenji Black Fryday, Steven
Scorn and Sherry Spunkz.

Billy Tan In Town
New!
Top Marvel artist, also fellow Malaysian Billy Tan came
back for a visit and nice enough to make time to have
dinner with us. He was having a tight schedule during
his two weeks visit juggling between Penang and KL,
family and relatives, friends and work(yes, he still
has to complete some pages during this visit). We had
a short but warm fellowship over dinner. Among the presence
were Tan Eng Huat(who revealed to us his superb Judge
Dredd pages), Chee, Aliow, Sau Lim, Lefty and Billy's
equally talented brother Munkao who were nice enough
to be our photographer for the night.

JUICE DJ Quest
New!
On the 18th of November, Gilamon were invited as a sponsor
for JUICE DJ Quest Regional final at Zouk. Its a battle
between Singapore's Champ DJ Soulja and Malaysia's Ben
Cracko. Lefty was there with Tim Homicidal and Joe Tribe
to witness the kick-assed performance by Ben who deservingly
came up on top. Congratulations!!!

Bizarre Side of Sau
Lim Pt 2
2 new short stories by Sau Lim are added in
our gallery.
“A Fable of Revolt” is a satirical take
on our local censorship board, who are capable of churning
out rules and regulation that are much more bizarre
than this story.
“The Anti-Boyfriend Story” is just a simple
angst chic story. Well, with a touch of supernatural
maybe. They are published in Utopia Magazine #95(1 Dec)
and #96(15 Dec) respectively.

Beautiful Junk 2006
Michael went solo to Penang with the help of
Kenny and Shaw Ming of Comic King/StarTalk(Thank you,
guys). BJunk
this year has the same good crowd, good exhibition and
good music. Among the designers or design units who
took part were Tin
Toy(KL), Tau-ew.com(Pg),
Bard(UK) and
BKK2(Bangkok).
Some of the great musicians who performed were Damn
Dirty Ape, Citizen Of Icecream and Nao. The festival
of art and noise was held on the 11th of November at
Galleri Seni Mutiara, Armenian Street, Penang. We want
to thank Chun
Woei and the gang for organising this event. Until
next year...

Rabu*Rabu, Anyone?
That means “Love*Love” for us commoners
and its the latest comic strip by Michael to be serialised
in Malaysia’s Gempak magazine. This humorous strip
is about Eliz and Willie and how their curious nature
put them in some whacky spots. Man, its really hard
to discribe Michael’s work and make it sounds
interesting, you all gotta read it yourself. Gempak
#168(15 Nov issue) marked the launch of the series which
featured a cover and an interview piece of Michael.

Manual Not Auto
Manual Epoch(M.E.) is a speciality shop for
custom designed canvas shoes. We were invited by M.E.’s
brain childs Mape, Jazz & Childson for a crossover
project and Michael has done one. Among other designers
who have left their mark on M.E.’s canvas was
Tribe
and Black
Fryday. Michael created the character “Matt”
specially for M.E.

Beautiful Junk Penang
Beautiful
Junk is here again and this year the theme is “Hero”.
We have contributed three posters for this exhibition.
The festival of art and noise will kick start at 11am
on the 11th of November at Galleri Seni Mutiara, Armenian
Street, Penang. Apart from the posters exhibition, there
will also be designer bazaar and life music performances
on that day. You can buy our t-shirts, including Lefty’s
“Hero and Sacrifice”(see description below),
which is specially released for this event, and comics
over there. If you can’t make it on that day,
you can still check out the posters for they will be
on display until the 18th of November.

Hero and Sacrifice
In conjunction with Beautiful
Junk exhibition on the 11th of November, Lefty has
came up with a new t-shirt. The core graphic illustrates
Major Zombie’s heroic save of Kaktus from the
brutal Zombie King. Lefty was working on this comics
story when he got this design assignment, so the idea
came naturally. The rosarch effect was inspired by Gnarls
Barkley’s “Crazy” video. Also we would
like to thank Scorn for hand printed the t-shirts for
us at such short notice.

X Cup’s 1st
Michael
and Lefty were featured in Taiwanese designer magazine,
X-Cup September ‘06 issue. X-Cup is a sister publication
of the acclaimed X-Fun magazine. We were imvited to
contribute a piece of work with the theme, “My
1st Experience”. Please click on the thumbnails

new short story,
which was published in Utopia Magazine issue #90 (15

Gengkey character, Freaky was on display as a prototype
figurine. Its was sculpted by acclaimed Hong Kong toy

Taipei Toy Festival
2006
We were among the 40 groups who participated
in the recent Taipei
Toy Festival 2006. As reported earlier, our creation
Cannibal Boy’s prototype figurine was revealed
during the festival. Click on to the photo section on
the right to check it out. Cannibal Boy, a creation
of Michael and Sau Lim, will be produced by Pixie
and it will be available for sale in next year’s
festival. Michael also did a few items for Pixie, among
them are a serie of comics entitled “So What Junior”
based on Pixie’s So What figurines and a packaging
illustration for Asian superstar Jay Chou’s Omni
x Pixie’s “Mine” So What figurine.
So What Junior’s animation which featured the
character design by Michael, were shown thru-out the
festival.

Territory Launch
Party
The launch of Territory
vol 5, which entitled Japan Fever, attracted so many
people to KL’s Galleriiizu,
there is hardly any room to move. The function not only
jam-packed with people, it was also filled with presentations
and talks by international designers who are flown in
especially for this event. Namely, they are Thailand’s
Thanawat Chongmahakul & Sasis Suwonpakprak(Bangkok
2), Australia’s Michael Dawidowicz(Urban
Collective) and Malaysia’s Liew Sanyen of
(If)
Interactive. These sessions are especially inspiring
for those students, some even came all the way from
Penang.
Gilamon also did our bit by demonstrating the creative
process of silkscreening on t-shirts. We have shown
the crowd two methods, cross printing and mixed colour
printing. We have created a brand new design which featured
the art of three of us in conjunction with the launch.
We were very happy with the attentant of the audiences
as well as the opportunity to talk to them. We also
get a chance to know some local and international designers.
All in all, it was a great evening.

Toth’s Departure
This is a bit late but Gilamon would still want
to pay our last respect to Alex Toth. A master in black
and white drawing. Mr Toth’s work is clean and
elegant, yet with a lively stroke. A quality that not
many artists have.
Mr Toth passed away at the age of 77 on his drawing
table. The most perfect way to depart for an artist.

Creative. Mike will definitely be taking lots of

Hong Kong Underground
During Lefty’s holiday in Hong Kong, he
managed to check-out Comix Magneto, an exhibition that
gathers almost all the non-mainstream local artists.
This is a Hong Kong comics art exhibition that you won't
see any of the usual kungfu stuffs, almost as refreshing
as an American comics exhibition without super heroes.
The concept of this exhibition is, each artist prepares
his/her own artwork based on a numbers of triangular
blocks. Some of the artists even turn their creation
into an installation art piece. To get more info, go
to comixhomebase.
Among the notable artists are Li Chi-tak, Stella So,
Ted Young, Craig Eu Yeung, Ah Hing and our friend Elphonso
Lam. |

Speaking of Elphonso,
his "Rock n Roll Burn" journal in Milk magazine

to be among the 100 artists and here are our version
of his punk-ness. We would like to take this opportunity
to congratulate him on this occasion as well. Here is
to another 100, man!!! |

Throw Up
Not literaly but graffitically. Throw up means
a quickly written piece of wall art mainly made out
of bubble letters. It was also the theme for Klan's
Graffiti Competition 2 which was held outside their
store in Melaka on the 26th of March. Lefty were fortunate
enough to be invited as one of the four judges(the other
three were April Kwan, JUICE mag editor; Joo Hong of
Radioactive Clothing and the man himself, Joe TRIBE)
Lots of people shown up and did their thing. We had
good fun eventhough we were under the sun(better than
if it rained, actually) and the boozes provided did
cool us down rather effectively. Lefty were impressed
by the graffiti writers that came from all over the
place even as far as Kelantan. And again, thanks to
Joe for a really fun event. We hope to be there again
next year. |

Street Roar
We had a table in the flea market area during
the one day indie music fest. The turn up was better
than we expected eventhough it was a gloomy and wet
day. KL PAC is located in the beautiful Sentul West.
When we first got there, we all felt like we stepped
foot on foreign land. Among the exhibitors were Urban
Cr3atures of Penang, which featured Gilamon's posters
in their lot. Gan from culturefight.org
was there to promote the site as well as selling some
authentic gas masks! We had a real good time enjoying
musical performances by local bands White Light, Citizen
of Icecream as well as ace foreign musicians such as
Dzap Dau Dau(all girls cutie pop-punk group that turned
Mike's knees into jelly), Sub(China), False Alarm(HK)
and Kazumasa
Hashimoto(Japan). |

size of Keropok Boy*'s tummy.
*Keropok Boy is a character from the brilliant "Malaysian
