MCC05
Malaysia
Comic Carnival (MCC) is finally come and go. Among
the highlights of this annual event (organised by Art
Square Group) are the appearance of Hong Kong's top
illustrator (also Mike's hero) Elphonso Lam and China's
Yao Fei La. To the Gilamons, MCC is even more meaningful
because of the launch of Sau Lim's Monggo collection
and Mike's all new Gengkey 100 art book. Like the previous
MCC, it serves as a platform for artists to chat and
catch up with each other. Among the artists that turn
up this round including Puppeteer, Tan Eng Huat, Adijin,
Totoro,
Sunder, Kromosom
and Chee. |

The return of Major
Zombie & Junior
Another 2 new T-shirts are released this month.
One by Lefty and the other by Michael. Lefty's design,
entitled "Zombie Jump!"features his creation Major Zombie
while Mike's "Zombie Junior", features Major Zombie
Jr, a completely made-over(or, "cutie-popularized")
version of the original. Both T's, like the previous
one(Sau Lim's "Worm Monster"), are manually(and "lovingly")
printed by The Gilamons! So no two Ts would look the
same! Again, they are very limited because we only have
weekends to do the silk screenings. If you are interested,
drop us an e-mail. |

Gilamon @Urban Creature
Studio, Penang
It was a very casual get together. We were warmly
greeted by Chun Woei and the whole cast of Urban
Creatures, as well as some of their friends that
came to visit during this special day. We exchanged
informations about the design scene in Penang and KL
(Lefty also collected some tips for the whereabouts
of yummy Penang food).
Apparently, Urban Creatures specialize in video editing,
post production design among others and most of their
clients are from overseas. Chun Woei is also a part-time
lecturer for
a major art college in the island, therefore, their
gallery is frequent by art students. We left
a few pieces of our (very limited) DIY T-shirts and
ashcans for sale there. Anyone who's interested please
visit the gallery and check out our stuffs. Just tell
them that Gilamon sent you. Location wise, this studio-gallery
is strategically located on the third floor of a new
shop lot just opposite Island Plaza. Its easy to get
there even by public transport. See news bellow
for the full address and contact number. |

unknown or unfamiliar kind, as we keep coming up and
experimenting with weird approach and the ability to
invent and develop original ideas."
"Now we r fortunate enough to get a nest for us
to stay in. This amazingly average size nest is going
to b our design lab & gallery. To hold our first
exhibition, we r inviting fellow designers and creative
ppl to join us to share our opinion n ideas all around.

The Never Ending
Tales
Mike is recently busy working on his Gengkey's
Characters Artbook, inclusive of 100 character design
from his famous Gengkey series, all compiled in one
book. Schedule to published at the end of this year.
Due to his greedy behaviour, 100 characters wasn't enough
for him,
he wanted more. So Mike comes out with this half year
plan for another series of character design, which he
named--The
Never Ending Tales. It'll be featured in exclusively
in our website! So please visit us from time to time
(every month actually) to check out those cute but evil
looking character pin-ups at our gallery section. |

Gilamon T @ Beautiful
J
Beautiful Junk was successfully held on the 11th
June, 2005. Venue were changed from The Fort to Dewan
Seri Pinang due to the weather, but it didn't stop people
from around the country to visit this one day festival
of art and noise. More than 30 artists/designers contributed
exclusive artwork for this event. Top musicians like
Pete Teo, Damn Dirty Ape(DDA), Seven Colar T-shirt,
as well as new comers like Mumsters, Ugly Man made some
beautiful noise during that day.
We didn't do too badly ourselves as Gilamon launched
2 T-shirts and our ashcan #1.
One T was our own production and the other was a collaboration
with Radioactive. The fine folks of Radioactive did
a tremendous job in printing our design in embossed
felt ink. You all can still buy the T from Radioactive
outlets. Our ashcan #1 and the previous #0 was available
for sale as well. We want to thank those who showed
their support by buying our Ts and ashcans, especially
those who bought both! The Gilamons also want to thank
Chun Woei and the rest of the gang who organised this
event. Good work, my friend. Lets do it again next year.

Exclusive Preview
from Billy Tan
Here is an exclusive look at Billy
Tan's(Marvel Knight Spider-Man, X-23) creator own
project, Ghost Kid. The synopsis, as provided by MunKao(series
co-creator and Billy's brother) goes like this:
Garlic grabbing, Latin spewing, holy water in a vial.
None of that please. Ghostkid ain't your father's exorcist.
More likely to befriend a ghost then destroy it. Jack(Ghostkid)
runs an exorcism agency with his psychic granny, Ida
in LA which has both exorcised and adopted many stray
spirits and demons including a runaway demon princess
and a 6 legged lizard who have both become Jack's best
buds.
Jack helps keep the city "clean" with his
sling bag of enchanted artifacts such as Chinese yellow
charms, Mountain Dew that has been blessed and little
holy firecrackers.
His methods are definitely representative of the cosmopolitan
city he lives in complete with its idiosyncrasies.
Sounds good? Keep a look out @this site for more info
soon!

Graphic Art, Music,
Sea Breeze, Food and the Fort!
Book yourself on the 11th of June 2005 and be
a participant or an audience. Make a trip up north if
u are not from this beautiful island of Penang. You
might experience more than graphic design and music(hint:
f.o.o.d.). What makes this event even more interesting
is the location of this event: Fort Cornwallis. An expo
in a historical fort, how cool is that? The Gilamons
will be going up as well, see you all there! Check out
the website for further info:
http://www.beautiful-junk.com/
So far, Gilamon has submitted our T-shirt n posters

honorary member Tan Eng Huat returns with a woody Allen-isque

like this. FYI Tan's Batman maxi series(with writer
Andy Helfer) will be out in August, 2005. Check it out
in this June's Previews! Our second guest is superstar
Billy
Tan of X-23 and Marvel Knight Spider-Man fame. Billy,

Shanghai! Shanghai!
On the 21st of April, Lefty and Tan, braving
the chaotic situation in China, landed in Shanghai for
a 7 day holiday. Lefty: "Turns out its much more
peaceful than we imagined. No angry protestors, no one
breaks our Jap-made cameras and people are lining up
for their sushi, thank God! The next day, We were joint
by Tan's collaborator(and sometimes mentor) Andy Helfer
and wife Jaimie from US. Andy's witty characteristic
makes this trip really worthwhile. Ok, ok... those DVDs
are really cool too." (Lefty bought enough DVDs
to organise a week-long international film fest- ed) |

Hong Kong Fueyyy!
On April 28(the next day after Lefty came back
from Shanghai), Michael took off to Hong Kong, the purpose
his visit is to meet up with the local creative teams
and to check out the various art exhibitions.
Fortunately enough, He managed to visit the studio of
Brothersfree(Hong
Kong well-known figure designers). Gilamon have great
respect for Brothersfree because of their creative force
and their hard working attitude. Brothersfree's Taiwan
Exhibition also mark the launch of their latest book,"Brotherslife".
This Epitome of a book contains ALL the figures ever
created by the hardworking trio. Its a must have not
only for the fans, but also for action figure lovers.
Michael also manage to have a sneak preview on Brothersfree's
latest figure project, which involve crossover with
a well known branded jeans company.
That same day, Pixie's
Mark Chang(Taiwan) was there too, at Brothersfree's
studio, well....er... that's cool ;)
After the trip to Brothersfree's studio, Michael visited
Tom
Ho(Hong Kong well-known(again?) comic book artist).
Tom is kind enough to share his working experience and
progress of his work to him Michael. well, i guess our
hero, Mikey learned alot of valuable lessons there!
Last but not least, Michael met his idol- Elphonso
Lam, Hong Kong well-known(ya!) comic book artist/rocker
dude!
And, you hear it from us first, Elphonso's new comic
"Sexy Rock" is going to publish on a comic
magazine call "Cheese" starting May this year.
Michael would like to thank all these people who was
being mentioned above for sacrificing their precious
time to meet up with him while he was in HK, "Thanks
to all!" he said, weeping(as usual- ed).

Will Eisner's Departure
Gilamons would like to express our condolences
to the Eisner family for the recent passing of Mr Will
Eisner.
Mr Eisner, to say the least, is one of the few individuals
who lifted comics from the status of disposable dailies
to the level of art. His endurance and passion as an
artist/storyteller can be compared to no other. If we
would live as long as he does, we hope we could draw
as long as he does, too. But never as good. |
